Festung Marienburg, Museum für Franken Würzburg

As part of its transformation into the Museum für Franken, the entire listed fortress complex at Marienberg is being renovated and remodelled in several construction phases in order to meet the requirements of a contemporary museum. The project comprises the internal restructuring and remodelling of approximately 11,800 m² of usable floor area. This includes areas for new permanent and temporary exhibitions, visitor infrastructure, museum depots and administration, and improved visitor flow and accessibility throughout the museum and fortress.

The design is based on a sensitive approach to the listed building. Particular attention is being paid to the use of sustainable and historically available building materials such as clay, lime and timber.

The first phase, completed in 2024, created approximately 900 m² of new accommodation for the Castle and Gardens Administration, providing essential infrastructure for the ongoing transformation of the site.
